POST-OPERATIVE INFORMATION

Breast surgery

Bilateral breast reduction

Immediately after your surgery:

  • Rest quietly – no exercise, lifting, bending or stretching above your head for 1 week.

  • You may experience some swelling, bruising and you may also experience some tenderness around the drain sites.

  • You may need to sleep with a slight elevation (on 2 pillows) for the first week or so.

  • You will need to wear a bra (non-underwire type) day and night for 6 weeks.

  • Take strong pain relieving medication as prescribed and only if required. Panadol 4-6 hourly usually helps.

Taking care of your wound, showering and what to do before your next appointment:

  • Leave the white tape that is covering your suture lines in place until you come and see us 7-10 days after your surgery unless otherwise instructed.

  • You may get the tapes wet after 24 hours, pat them dry with a towel or use a hair dryer to dry them if you wish.

  • You may drive when you feel safe to, but avoid it if possible for 2 weeks.

Post-operative appointment:

  • Your first initial post-op appointment will be made around 10 days post your surgery date.

  • Your tapes will be changed, the wounds will be assessed and then redressed. Any remaining sutures will also be removed.

Things to note:

  • If you develop any swelling, bruising, redness, pain, wound discharge or fevers, please contact the rooms on 8267 3976 or see your local GP (if you are unable to get into the rooms). If after-hours, contact the Nurse Manager of the hospital where you had your procedure.

  • Appointments up until 6 weeks post your surgery date are post-operative appointments. After that period a review fee will take effect.

  • Any further questions please contact the rooms on 8267 3976.
